Learning American Mahjong can be difficult.
Finding quality mahj materials and reliable education shouldn't be.
This page brings together trusted content creators and reputable brands to support your learning and help you feel confident both at the table and in what you are purchasing.
Playing Cards
The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card is the only official mahjong card for standardized American Mah Jongg. The website is dated, but I recommend purchasing cards directly from them. Purchasing from other retailers may lead to receiving counterfeit cards, often with errors.
I also recommend purchasing the Mah Jongg Made Easy (MJME) rule book. This is the definitive source for all American Mahjong rules.
In 2025, two major retailers released their own playing cards. Oh My Mahjong released the International Mahjong Card (IMC) and The Mahjong Line released The Big Card. These should not be confused with the official NMJL cards. However, they are popular alternatives and use standardized rules as found in the NMJLs MJME rule book.

Lowcountry Retailers
Shopping local is always best, but I also recommend getting your eyes on the physical product before purchasing. Many mahjong companies do not take returns or exchanges. So, here's a nonexhaustive list of retailers in the Lowcountry that carry mahjong supplies:
-
The Happy Southerner (Charleston)
-
Marsh on the May (Bluffton)
-
Gifted Hilton Head (HHI)
